Outstanding summary of the first two decades of the Jamestown Colony and the missteps and misunderstanding that occurred while the colony was under the control of the Virginia Company. The author has an engaging writing style and in the hardcover edition, the type font is easy to read and the paper has a nice feel.

The author attempts to give a balanced view of what was going on from both the British colonist and the native population perspective during the early years of the colony and he does not shy away from detailing the sheer incompetence demonstrated by the Virginia Company in the formation and administration of the colony though he does not do this in a preachy manner. He provides a chronological summary of the facts and lets the reader draw their own conclusions.

Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a more detailed treatment of the early history of the Jamestown Colony. It is far more informative than the sanitized versions of the period's history one normally encounters in general history texts, the popular media, or at the site itself.

Captivating account of the first substantial attempt by England to colonize Virginia. Unlike many histories that initially bog readers down in European background, Horn forms the introduction against the background of native Indians at ground zero. "A Land As God Made It" is a fascinating read from start to finish.
Well written and wel-told account of the first permanent English settlement in America.
Like many people, prior to reading this book my knowledge of Jamestown and early American colonization were quite limited and could have fit in a thimble. Author James Horn has done what will soon be considered a classic and a masterpiece on this subject.
From the initial foothold onto American soil in 1607 by John Smith, Captain Christopher Newport, Bartholomew Gosnold, John Ratcliffe and a total of 144 adventurers, we develop an understanding as to the trials and tribulations of colonizing and conquest in a foreign land spanning two decades of time. Hunger, disease, Indian hostilities and moral fiber are at its tautest for establishing settlements in such a vast unexplored region.
Horn's respectable character analyses of Powhatan Chief Wahunsonacock and his brother Opechancanough, along with the great many other personalities involved on both sides, gives this rendition a profound and discerning look into how America began.

This is a great book for anyone who enjoyed the history of colonial America, or any student studying American history. It is well written by a respected Jamestown expert who has also authored some journal articles on various subjects of Jamestown. Jamestown was founded in 1606, but since the original colony was located by an archeological dig in the mid 1990's we are learning so many new things about the colony and its people. James Horn is at the forefront of this new look into Jamestown.
" The Land As God Made It " debunks much of the myth that has taken the place of the true sacrifice and determination of these often flawed men . They over came great difficulty in even surviving the first decade of settlement . Using first hand accounts Horn reveals that it was only with a strong hand at the helm that the Virginia Company managed to plant the Flag of England and an English speaking America to come . With out the success Virginia colony the pilgrims would have had no place to sail to in the first place . No example of what could be done nor foreknowledge of how hard it would be to settle this land . With knowledge of the cost of settling the Virginia colony in human lives and human suffering , the Plymouth colonist came prepared even to knowing in advance that many of the first wave would die , but success was possible .
Horn presents much information about the first decade plus of trails tribulation and final success of the James town colony and its growth . The motives and the frailty of colonist are revealed . It makes the triumph even more incredible . A very enlightening book . American History lovers will appreciate it for years to come .
“A Land as God Made It – Jamestown and the Birth of America” by James Horn is a chronicle of the English to establish a permanent colony in North America in the early 17th Century. Bringing Protestantism to the Indians to counter balance the Catholicism of the Spanish was one goal. But larger was the prospect of bringing home riches such as the gold and silver flowing into Spain. A private enterprise, the Virginia Company, was formed by share holders to explore and exploit the Chesapeake Bay area. Familiar individuals appear, if not under familiar circumstances, such as Captain John Smith and Pocahontas. The tenuous relationship of the colonists with the Native Americans is examined in some detain. There are many quotes from letters and journals of the day, lending to the authority of the narrative. The unconventional spelling of the day is both distracting and fascinating.
Horn has written a good, succinct narrative of the Jamestown story going beyond the familiar characters of John Smith and Pocahontas to include the larger picture of Spanish and English competition in the New World and the expansion of English settlement in the Chesapeake.
A perfect balance between more limited volumes and longer histories that lose focus following too many threads and overuse of long quotation of primary source accounts.
