The Grownup A Story by the Author of Gone Girl Gillian Flynn Books

I ordered this book when it was available for pre-order, but didn't get around to reading until now. This is due to me buying books faster than I read them. Anyways after completing the book I was tremendously disappointed for 2 main reasons:

1. The book seemed rush. Before reading the end I felt the book had more potential as an actual novel instead of a short story. Had the book at least ended properly I would have given it at least three stars.

2. Again, the ending was just horrible. It did not go with the idea of the books and was completely left field. This book will make you upset when you read the end, so buyer beware!!!

I must say I am disappointed in Flynn. I have read all her books and found them to be enjoyable. My favorite books in order are Sharp objects, Dark places, then Gone Girl. Yes, I liked those better than Gone Girl, but that's not to say the book was bad. Gone Girl was an amazing book as well, it's just was not my favorite. However, this book is one that I would like to forget the author wrote. It was rushed and should not have been published. Not sure who the editor was that approved this book as a good short story. Hope this helps

The Grownup A Story by the Author of Gone Girl Gillian Flynn Books Reviews

I love anything by Gillian Flynn. I would read a phone book if she wrote one. The Grownup is a creepy, engrossing read. I read it in one sitting! I do wish it had been a little longer, but I loved the story!
So this was creepy and confusing and I don’t really know what to think about that ending so I am giving it a non-committal 3 stars. The story of Grownup challenges to question what story you know, and what is real by how it is framed. Even at the end, we don’t know what happens and I guess for some that is something awesome but my curious ass wants a proper conclusion dammit.

Anyway, the main story goes like this - a psychic/sex worker (it is complicated) is asked to come cleanse a house of malevolent spirits by a rich woman. She first thinks that the woman will be easy to trick, but while in the house, she starts to feel watched, and creeped out. The creepy teen step-son and the weirdness of the house doesn’t help. She doesn’t know who is bad - is it the step-son or the house, or is it as the kid says - the mother itself? Who knows? This book is more about the experience and the messing up of your beliefs in what could be possible. I personally did not see that twist coming but my buddy reader did, so maybe I was just caught up in the atmosphere of the novel. Whatever it was, the ending just left me conflicted, okay?
I loved this short story by Gillian Flynn. I was completely enthralled. I read it in one sitting. Admittedly the first line is a shocker but it definitely drew me in. I thought this was an example of Gillian Flynn’s writing style at its best. Her raw blunt prose were crafted nicely to be shocking but not off putting as I’ve found them to be occasionally in books like Dark Places. I felt invested in the characters even though the story was short. It was a curious little story and quit devilish. I could see her spinning a tale someday that leans more horror or supernatural from this. In any case, she’s a unique story teller and I hope she writes more short stories. I’ve read all her books which I can’t say about many authors so I am intrigued as to what she writes next. I recommend if you are a fan of at least one of her books, or if you like twisty tales with some shock value and complicated, inherently flawed characters. After all, we all have flaws!
I found this enjoyable to read and finished it in one sitting, but as other reviewers have noted, it sets things up and leaves you hanging at the end. It reads more like a chapter from a book than a short story. If this is the case, Flynn's publishers have hit on a great money making gimmick- sell the first chapter as a short story, then sell the completed novel again to everyone who read it. Disappointing.
The story drew me in...I knew who the main character was, and while I didn't like her I understood her. The problem is the story ended but didn't have an ending. Maybe that was the point but I was left feeling like I'd eaten half a meal.
The first lines of this book REALLY lure you in, in an X-rated, very adult way. Which is not to say that this is one of those oversexed books, because that's just a tripwire to lure you in. This is only a 60 page short by Gillian Flynn, known more for "Gone, Girl" and "Sharp Objects." This is a book that will keep your mind racing long after the last page is read. I honestly am not sure how to interpret the ending of the book....it's that good and Ms. Flynn is a great thriller writer. This is one of those books that you could talk about for days and still not have a good answer. A good old fashioned horror story about a haunted house and a troubled young man, where absolutely nothing is as it seems.
I have been jonesing for more Flynn and it's been ages since she's published anything, then this popped up during my google search, so I thought I would give it a try.

The first 3/4 of the book is pretty amazing and very Gillian Flynn. I'm always drawn in by her biting prose and he likeable, unlikeable characters. She always finds a way to write real, terrible people. Nerdy, fit right into her rogues gallery.

The story starts to build pretty quickly and it drew me in, but then just as it was getting going, it ended and stupidly. I keep hoping this is the beginning of a much larger story, but I won't get my hopes up too much here.

I read this in about 30 min and definitely give the first 3/4 of the book a 4 star rating, but the lame and rushed ending, gets a 1.

Irritated.
